Continuous beeps, alerts and end-of-programme jingles from your household appliances don’t just irritate – they can overwhelm. For millions, these high-pitched sounds can trigger genuine stress, fatigue or sensory overload as our human brains often perceive these demanding sounds as too much to process on top of all the other stresses of daily life.
Our 2026 National Noise YouGov surveys highlight just how widespread this issue is: over half (54%) of UK parents report that someone in their household experiences sound sensitivity, with a quarter (25%) specifically naming a child. Noise sensitivity is particularly pronounced among neurodiverse individuals, with 87% of autistic people saying they’re affected by sound¹, rating it as more important than thermal, visual or indoor air quality considerations.
Globally, the numbers are even more staggering. At least 1 in 5 people have atypical hearing², and 1 in 6 have measurable hearing difficulties³. That adds up to over 1 billion people worldwide – including 10 million in the UK alone – who may be affected by unnecessary household noise. It’s no surprise, then, that 74% of our survey respondents said they would actively choose appliances with a “mute” setting over similar products without one.
As awareness of neurodiversity and sound sensitivity continues to grow, we have created the first in a new insight series equipping households with the practical solutions needed to reduce sensory stress and create quieter living environments.
Our technical and acoustic teams have examined thousands of product manuals, performance databases and manufacturer specifications to pinpoint appliances with effective mute or silencing options. These findings have been compiled into the Quiet Mark Mute Button Models Guide below, which gives you the insights you need to hit mute and reclaim the calm.
